High Fidelity Listening Sessions: Azymuth

This week’s HFLS features Azymuth! A Brazilian Jazz-Funk trio whose original founding members include Jose Roberto Bertrami on the keys, Alex Malheiros on the bass, and Ivan Conti on Drums. Bertrami and Conti passed away recently and would have celebrated their birthdays this month, so we pay tribute to them by dedicating this evening’s listening session to their music.

Azymuth was formed in 1973 after a string of successful collaborations with famed singer and songwriter Marcos Valle. The band’s first album, the self-titled “Azimuth” netted three successful singles and would introduce the band’s signature sound –– a fusion of jazz, funk, disco, bossa nova, and latin rhythms –– to the rest of the world. Azymuth’s trademark sound proved highly desirable and allowed the band to release 28 albums over the course of its storied, prolific career.

For tonight’s listening session, we take but a small sample from their back catalog, the albums: Azimuth (1975), Águia Não Come Mosca (1977), Telecommunication (1981), and Flame (1984) and we hope that hearing these inspires further digging into their rich discography.

Our program begins at 8pm and as with every listening session, we encourage early arrival and low-speaking voices.
